
Overview
James Burrell combines broad legal experience with expertise in technology and data security to assist companies with a wide range of transactions and disputes—particularly when they involve cyber law, privacy, and security.
Certified in United States privacy law (CIPP/US), James assists clients with complying with EU’s GDPR, California’s CCPA/CPRA, and emerging privacy laws throughout the world. This includes assisting clients with developing appropriate policies, ensuring proper data protection, creating plans to prepare for and react to potential data breaches, conduct international data transfers, and ensure that new products and services are structured to adhere to applicable laws.
James also assists clients when they face disputes with regulators or private entities. He has experience in all phases of litigation and has represented individuals, startup companies, and Fortune 500 companies in court. Matters have included data breaches, contract disputes, theft of trade secrets, patent infringement, trademark infringement, cybersquatting, regulatory disputes, and general litigation.
Prior to joining the firm, James practiced in the Los Angeles office of a national law firm. Before that, James served as a law clerk for the Honorable Dee Benson of the United States District Court for the District of Utah where he assisted with cases concerning legal issues such as patent infringement, tort liability, search and seizure rights, and free speech on the Internet. Judge Benson also served as a judge on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court.
James graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was on both the Journal of Law and Public Policy and the Journal of Law and Technology. James also participated in the Cyberlaw Clinic and was involved with the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.
Before attending law school, James was an Information Systems Consultant for Accenture where he worked on a variety of digital security and privacy projects for clients in both the private and public sectors.
