COSTA MESA, Calif., January 2, 2014 – On December 3, John B. Hurlbut, Jr., a senior partner with Rutan & Tucker, LLP, received the 2013 Orange County Bar Foundation’s “Sammy” award for the assistance he has provided to the Foundation in support of its mission. The Daily Journal, the state’s leading newspaper serving the legal community, recently ran a story about the honor.
Hurlbut is a longtime supporter, a past president, and current executive committee member of the organization. He currently co-chairs the committee for Project SELF, an eight-week paid internship program offered to high school juniors from low-income families in Orange County. The Sammy is dedicated in memory of Robert Sam Barnes, a longtime Foundation supporter and Hurlbut friend who contributed significantly to the organization.
In 2012, Hurlbut received the Franklin G. West Award from the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). In addition to Justice Scoville, he is the only attorney to have also received the OCBA Harmon G. Scoville Award (2003), which honors a member of the Orange County legal community whose career exemplifies the highest standards of the profession and who has contributed to the Bar while championing our constitutional system of justice.
Hurlbut began his legal career in 1964, practicing business litigation at Rutan & Tucker following his graduation from Stanford Law School. He made partner in 1970 and has headed the firm’s Trial Section and served as managing partner. He has received many other accolades, including: the Orange County/Long Beach Region of the Anti-Defamation League’s Marcus Kaufman Jurisprudence Award (2010); Public Law Center (PLC) Attorney of the Year (2007); Southern California “Super Lawyer” (2006-2013); and Best Lawyers in America (2006-2013).
