Costa Mesa, Calif., July 14, 2015 – A daring open-water swim across Lake Tahoe by 45-year-old double-amputee Harry Boucher was sponsored by Rutan & Tucker LLP, one of California’s leading full-service law firms.
Boucher accepted the challenge in order to highlight the need for more accessibility for people with disabilities. Despite losing his feet to meningitis as a toddler, he has overcome his disability to become an accomplished long-distance swimmer.
In the end, this past Sunday, the Turlock, California resident was able to complete approximately nine miles of his intended 12-mile swim, towing his 11-year-old son Max, who has cerebral palsy, in a kayak most of the way.
Boucher is a 1988 Turlock High School classmate of Rutan & Tucker Partner Ash Pirayou, who is based in the Rutan & Tucker’s Palo Alto office and practices in the firm’s Government & Regulatory Law Section and Land Use and Natural Resources Department. Pirayou is also a member of the volunteer Board of Directors of the VMC Foundation, a nonprofit that serves the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System. The system is widely acclaimed for its world-class Spinal Cord Trauma Center.
“Harry’s herculean effort to raise funds and awareness by making his watery journey across Lake Tahoe is an inspiration for everyone,” said Pirayou. The challenging swim drew the attention of many news outlets in Northern California and was widely publicized. Funds raised through the swim will support the Society for Disabilities’ efforts to build a Miracle League baseball field and adapted playground in Modesto, California.
