IRVINE, CA – Rutan is proud to announce Partner Phil Kohn has been chosen by the Orange County/Long Beach region of the Anti-Defamation League to receive the 2022 ADL’s Marcus Kaufman Jurisprudence Award. The ADL annual Jurisprudence Dinner at which Phil will be honored (along with Brooke Weitzman and Christina M. Zabat-Fran) will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the Turnip Rose Promenade in Costa Mesa. Congratulations to Phil for his lifetime of service not only to Rutan, but also to the larger community. Past recipients include John Hurlbut and Mike Rubin, and Rutan & Tucker, LLP (Rutan is the only law firm to have received the award).
For decades, the ADL has been our nation’s premier civil rights and human relations organization, fighting anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds. Through education, legislation, inter-group dialogue and the monitoring of extremist groups, ADL seeks to create a community free from hate and bigotry. This honor is bestowed upon attorneys who make outstanding contributions to their communities, serve as role models to their profession, and exemplify the ADL’s mission of fighting hate and promoting justice for all. The honorees are selected by the past Marcus Kaufman award recipients, who are legal luminaries well-known not only for their professional achievements but also for their community leadership.
Phil leads by example when it comes to sustained, impactful service to improve our community. He has devoted thousands of hours to pro bono legal services over the years. Phil was a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Law Center from 1997 to 2021 and served as its President from 2001 through 2003. Phil is a consummate professional, mentor, and role model. He is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable government law attorneys in the State, having served as Laguna Beach’s City Attorney for decades (in addition to being City Attorney or special legal counsel for various other cities over the years). He is a longstanding member and former President of the Orange County City Attorneys Association. Orange County judges have several times retained Phil to represent them in lawsuits or dealings with the County or the State, reflecting the esteem with which Phil is held in judicial circles. Phil’s name is on many key appellate cases as attorney for the prevailing party, establishing important legal precedents. Phil is also one of only three attorneys at Rutan to be awarded the firm’s John B. Hurlbut award (the first being John Hurlbut) for superbly reflecting Rutan’s core values of excellence, teamwork, responsiveness, and integrity.
