Intellectual Property Attorney/Patent Agent

Intellectual Property attorney or patent agent sought by Rutan & Tucker, LLP, one of California’s largest full-service law firms with a successful and expanding intellectual property practice. Applicants should have at least one year of experience representing clients in intellectual property transactions with a background in either electrical engineering, computer science or mechanical engineering, and be a California-admitted attorney from a firm with a comparable intellectual property practice and a top law school with solid grades.

Corporate Commercial Finance Associate

Corporate commercial finance associate sought by Rutan & Tucker, LLP, one of California’s largest full-service law firms with a successful and expanding corporate practice. Applicants should have at least 3 years of experience (ideally 5-7) and have a working knowledge of Article 9 of the UCC, with a preference towards those candidates with broad experience in commercial finance transactions. Candidates should have experience drafting and negotiating loan and security documents.  Depending on the year level, candidate would be expected to have managed transactions from inception to closing. Experience representing both lenders and borrowers is a plus. Candidate should be a California-admitted attorney from a firm with a comparable corporate practice and a top law school with solid grades.

Government Law Associate

Position: Mid-Level Associate to begin immediately

Section: Government Law

Salary: Government Law Section Salary Range: $195,000 – 260,000 (different and separate from other departments at Rutan & Tucker, LLP)

Billing Requirement: 1,950 hours (different and separate from other departments at Rutan & Tucker, LLP); 50 hours pro bono counted toward billables

Duties and Responsibilities:      

For this role, we are specifically looking for someone with 3-5 years of experience and knowledge of municipal law and government agency litigation.

Qualifications: 

Required: Applicants must:

  • Have a license to practice law in the State of California.
  • Experience in Public Agency, Land Use and Litigation
  • Have strong analytical and reasoning skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Be a problem-solver, a creative thinker, and team player.
  • Have good organizational and logistical skills, especially with remote working conditions.

Preferred: The following qualifications are desirable:

  • Experience in local government, legislative drafting, real estate, and other public agency-related matters.
  • Ability to deal directly with clients such as public officials, departmental personnel, and members of the public.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Strong advocacy skills.

IP Salary Range:

  • Salary Range: $210,000 – $275,000

Ideally, the candidate will have experience assisting with one or more of the following:

  • Privacy compliance (including under the U.S. State Privacy Law, GDPR, and GLBA);
  • Advertising and Internet-based and mobile privacy issues;
  • Privacy program implementation and management;
  • Regulatory investigations relating to privacy and data security issues; and
  • Data breach response and preparedness activities.
  • Drafting privacy notices, internal policies, incident response plans, and data processing addenda

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of legal experience, with at least 2-3 years of practical privacy/data protection experience
  • J.D. and CIPP/US, CIPP/E. CIPM, CIPT certifications
  • Solid knowledge of and familiarity with U.S. and EU privacy and data security laws, regulations and standards, including HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, U.S. state and federal privacy, data security, breach notification, consumer protection and employment-related privacy laws, regulations and proposed legislation
  • Demonstrated transactional experience, including reviewing, drafting and negotiating privacy and data protection contract terms and agreements, such as Data Processing Addenda (DPAs) and data processing, usage, and/or transfer agreements
  • Experience with implementing incident response plans, responding to data security incidents and advising on applicable legal requirements
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize under tight time constraints
  • Ability to understand and summarize into “plain English” complex legal requirements
  • Self-motivated and independent, but able to discern when matters should be escalated and when further guidance is needed
  • Ability to translate legal requirements into practical guidance for non-lawyers
  • Active membership and good standing in at least one State Bar
